The Ministry of Interior has issued a directive which imposes a state of curfew on the Chereponi and Saboba townships in the Northern Region.
The Curfew which takes effect today follows recent clashes between the Konkombas and Chokosis in the region.
In a Press Release dated the 3rd of January, 2019 and signed by the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery stated that,
“The Minister for the Interior has on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument imposed a 4:00 pm to 7:00 am curfew on the Chereponi and Saboba Townships and their environs, effective Thursday,3rd January 2019”.
According to the release, the decision comes on the back of the clashes between the two ethnic groups mentioned.
“The Imposition of the curfew follows the outbreak of violence in the towns arising from clashes between two ethnic groups ( Konkombas and Chokosis)”.
Emphasizing the order, a total ban has been placed on all persons in the area and it’s surrounding communities from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon and therefore any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
However, the Government has called on the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and also use non-violent means to solve delicate matters and also focus on maintaining peace in the area.
