The Minister for Railway development, Mr Joe Nana Kobina Akwa Ghartey has announced government’s plan to restructure the railway sector.
The project which will begin by the end of this year, would see a New Standard Gauge line to be constructed from Tema in Accra to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on Starr Fm this morning, the MP for Essikado Ketan disclosed that, a total of 14 companies have been shortlisted for the project, adding that the Ministry has had a pre- business conference with the companies.
He however said that, the companies during the conference asked for the final submission of proposals to be extended from the August 26 deadline to a later date.
“we have been forced to extend the date to another three to four weeks” he said.
Again, he indicated that, after the companies have brought in their proposals, the Ministry would have to evaluate each one of them to assess which company has the best technology, deliver within the shortest possible time and also accept the level of government’s participation.
On the issue of the Accra-Mpatadan railway which use to be Accra-Akosombo, he said that, “When I was deputy speaker, I remember presiding over that contract and it was supposed to terminate the Akosombo-Mpatadan project because there was going to be tunnel which would run through the rock in Akosombo”
Also, the construction will bring a whole new development in the area(Mpatadan) as a new estate will be built around that part.
The MP said, every railway line brought with it the possibility for expansion and growth and for the first time a railway will be seen in the Volta Region which will open up a new route to Yendi in the Northern Region.
Finally, we are working on the train line from Sekondi Takordi to Kumasi, he stated.
